Academy of Holy Angels Names 2020 HOBY Representative Students

HOBY aims to develop and inspire a global community of youth through a variety of international programming.

Katherine Day, Brooke Hess, and Ria Jani were chosen to represent the Academy of the Holy Angels at the 2020 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference. Natasha Dhanrajani is the alternate. Katherine Day, of Oradell, is a versatile athlete who is pursuing her Girl Scout Gold Award. She is a member of the National Beta Honor Society. Day is co-captain of the AHA junior variety soccer team, and plays for two local teams. She is a member of the AHA varsity golf team, and has played lacrosse and softball. Her hobbies include skiing, archery, and snowboarding. She also volunteers at her church.

Brooke Hess of Cedar Grove is a nationally ranked tennis player. She plays for the AHA varsity tennis team, and volunteers at Englewood’s GRIT program. Established by AHA senior Chennie Kim, GRIT allows children access to tennis lessons from experienced teen volunteers. In 2019, Hess was first singles player, first team all-league, and first team all-county.

Hess is regularly named to the principal’s list for maintaining an average of 95 or above. She is currently taking Sister Kathleen Cornell’s leadership seminar at AHA. Hess is sophomore class president, and a member of DECA.

Ria Jani, of Haworth, has twice been accepted to the Harvard Model UN Conference. She earned “best speaker” honors for her work with the AHA debate team, and received a verbal commendation at the Bergen Technical School Model UN Conference. Jani is also a member of the AHA concert choir. Jani participates in Sister Kathleen Cornell’s leadership seminar, and has been accepted to AHA’s 2020 Oxford study abroad program. This student is also an Angel Ambassador. She earned a medal for her work on the National Spanish Exam, and has been named to the principal’s list. Jani has led debate and chess programs for students in her community.

Natasha Dhanrajani resides in Bardonia. She contributes to the AHA newspaper and earned a regional gold key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Her pieces have been published in “Scrawl: Rockland Teens Write.”

She has earned the New York State Attorney General’s Triple C Award for courage, character, and commitment. She also received the Presidential Education Excellence Award–Gold, and the Columbia University Dean Leadership Award. Dhanrajani is frequently named to the Principal’s List.

She attended the International Day of the Girl at the United Nations. In addition to serving as an Angel Ambassador, she is a member of Outreach, Executive Board, Diversity Council, Society of Women Engineers, and a group that sings for senior citizens. Dhanrajani plays violin for the AHA Orchestra, takes private dance lessons, and plays intramural soccer. She studied at the New York Film Academy and at Columbia University. In 2020, she will take AHA's bespoke course in critical thinking and oral presentation, which is held at Oxford University.

Dhanrajani volunteers at her library and for a food bank. She speaks three languages: English, her first language, Hindi, and Spanish, for which she received a silver medal (94th percentile) on the national exam.
