Academy of the Holy Angels Tri-M Music Honor Society Raises $1,300 for Hungry for Music

Academy of the Holy Angels Tri-M Music Honor Society Raises $1,300 for Hungry for Music

Financial constraints can make music lessons seem like an unattainable luxury for some children. In an effort to effect change, the Tri-M Music Honor Society at the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, New Jersey, recently raised $1,300 for Hungry for Music, a non-profit organization that gives young musicians access to a variety of musical instruments.

This month, Tri-M hosted a Jeans Pass event. Supporters paid $5 for the chance to dress down for the day, and the proceeds were donated to Hungry for Music.

Established in 1994 by Jeff Campbell, this Washington, D.C.-based non-profit purchases instruments for children who cannot afford to purchase or rent their own. HFM accepts donated instruments, and young musicians can even request a specific type of instrument. Since the organization was established, over 11,000 instruments have been delivered to children in 49 states and 25 countries, according to Hungry for Music.

Tri-M Chapter 2150 Co-presidents Maya Sharma and Maria Guyre, both of whom reside in River Vale, instantly connected with Hungry for Music’s goal.

“We chose Hungry for Music as our beneficiary since we felt that other students should have the opportunity to have music incorporated in their curriculum as we do and that their economic situation shouldn't impede them from doing so,” Guyre said.

Sharma noted, “Hungry for Music's initiative to share the gift of music is exactly what we strive to do through the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Hungry for Music offers children who face economic hardship the wonderful freedom that playing an instrument provides. Their impact has been both large and widespread, supporting parents who cannot afford the cost of an instrument, music programs in need of support, and so much more. After hearing of this organization, we were drawn to support the cause.” Sharma added, “I think a lot of people can agree that music has had an impact on their life, whether it means listening to it or playing an instrument. For me, I have watched the transformative nature of music countless times. From having the ability to uplift an audience and the power to change my own attitude as I play, music has been invaluable to me. There are no age or language barriers. Everyone is capable of connecting through music. I am so fortunate to be a part of the Tri-M Honor Society, which promotes the spreading and appreciation of music.”

AHA’s chapter of Tri-M is moderated by Instrumental Music Director Mariann Annecchino. The Academy’s group is notably active in terms of fundraising and outreach performances. Tri-M members from AHA have presented numerous community concerts at locations that include residences for senior citizens and Spectrum for Living. Last year, this group hosted a fundraiser to support the music program at Sacred Heart School in Jersey City.

Sponsored by the National Association for Music Educators, Tri-M recognizes young musicians and strives to produce leaders in music education and advocacy. In order to be eligible for membership, students must demonstrate excellence in music, scholarship, character, leadership, and service to others.
