Fencing Academy Offering Two-Week Summer Day Camp

Nyack-based Thrust Fencing Academy is offering a new summer camp this year, held at the Nyack Library. The day will be split into two parts: learning fencing techniques and being exposed to the sport with a lunch break at Memorial Park.

Thrust Fencing Academy owner and three-time Olympian Mika’il Sankofa is holding two summer day camps for ages 5-11 in July. Sankofa says the camp is designed to expose young kids to the sport of fencing. “I came up with the idea after parents from my club expressed interest for a fun and unique summer activity for their kids,” Sankofa says.

Each day is split into two sessions: The morning will focus on campers learning fencing techniques and fundamentals designed to improve confidence, coordination, and focus. The afternoon will focus on exposing the campers to the sport through Olympic and World Championship fencing videos, as well as a lunch break and outdoor games at Memorial Park.

Sankofa, a USA Fencing Hall of Fame inductee, says exposing kids of all ages to the Olympic sport has many benefits. “There are so many opportunities for kids to compete, travel worldwide, and enrich their lives academically through the sport," Sankofa says.

The day camp will be held at the Nyack Library, located at 59 S. Broadway in Nyack, and will run from 9am-3pm for two weeks. The day camp has a maximum registration of 16 kids to allow for a low student-to-teacher ratio, and all equipment needed for fencing is provided.

Thrust Fencing Academy, which specializes in saber fencing, holds classes six days a week for ages 5-19. Students are split into three groups: ages 5-7 are musketeers, ages 7-11 are beginners, and ages 11-19 are advanced.
