New City Pediatrician Group Offers Ear Device for Infants

Helping Kids Pediatrics, a New City pediatrician team, now offers the Earwell device as help for infants who have deformed ears. The device reshapes infants' ears without pain.

Husband-and-wife duo Stanley Jacob, M.D., and Elizabeth Jacob, M.D., have introduced a device to help correct infant ear deformities into their New City practice, Helping Kids Pediatrics.

The EarWell, produced by Becon Medical, is used on infants in the first three weeks of life to correct mild to moderate cosmetic ear deformities. The plastic device looks like a mold and helps to reshape ears without any pain. When worn on the ears for four to six weeks, the device has a 93 percent success rate.

Dr. Elizabeth Jacob says the practice started offering the EarWell after hearing parents talk about how their children were being bullied for deformed ears. “With all the bullying going on these days, kids can be a little cruel to each other, and when they are 8 or 9 or teenagers, the only other option would be surgery,” she says. “It’s an option that should be presented to parents in the beginning.”

In addition to the Earwell, Dr. Elizabeth Jacob has become a certified lactation counselor to help moms of newborns transition from the hospital to home.

“I feel like a lot of the time there is a gap in lactation from the hospital because when they come in, they have trouble breast-feeding,” she says. “It works out in our office because we can see the moms and the babies at once.”
