Academic Support Center Uses 3-Step Approach to Teach Reading and Writing

A new academic center in Rockland County, Hudson Valley Academic Support Services uses a three-step approach to help children improve reading and writing skills and vocabulary. Hudson Valley also offers test prep for statewide exams, essay writing help, and help for teens who are about to apply to colleges.

Hudson Valley Academic Support Services opened in March and offers a multi-sensory program for students struggling with reading and writing. Available for children ages 6 and older, students will participate in a three-step program that will improve his or her reading and writing skills and vocabulary. “A student that can read, can succeed,” says Ina Mufson, owner.

Through decoding, comprehension, and writing, children will use a multi-sensory approach to reading, using techniques such as letter tracing and sound echoing in isolation. 

“My mission is to make sure that every student can not only read, but comprehend the information that they’re reading,” Mufson adds, stressing the importance of being able to phonetically identify letter and sound relationships within words.

Each student will receive an individualized lesson plan catered to his or her strengths and weaknesses and meet with a tutor once or twice a week depending on specific needs. Older students will learn how to structure and outline a five-paragraph essay in addition to receiving test preparation for state exams such as the Regents Exam. Mufson also advises students who are about to apply to colleges, helping with everything from applications to personal essays.
