Breast Milk Depot Opens in South Nyack

Rockland County’s first breast milk depot opened at Kenneth H. Zatz, M.D., Pediatrics.
 

Kenneth H. Zatz, M.D., Pediatrics, a division of Allied Physicians Group, is a pediatric practice which puts a special emphasis on the importance on breastfeeding. It's also the location of Rockland County’s first breast milk depot, which is operated under The New York Milk Bank, and recently opened with support of the not-for-profit Allied Foundation.

The milk bank in South Nyack will help mothers who have extra breast milk donate to moms and infants in need of human milk. All donors and milk go through extensive testing and screening. The milk is pasteurized and benefits hospitals and the community throughout the state. The need for human milk is estimated at 9 million ounces to meet the demand of neonatal intensive care units across the nation.

"This milk is a medicine to many infants and life-saving to preemies," says Julie Bouchet-Horwitz, founder and executive director of the New York Milk Bank.

Allied Physicians Group is a partnership of over 120 physicians and 500 support staff members who serve 150,000 patients in the greater NYC, Long Island, and Hudson Valley areas. The Allied Foundation is a not-for-profit organization founded by Allied Physicians Group with a mission to improve the health and well-being of those in the community.

Later this year, The Allied Foundation will be opening diaper banks at many of their locations where people are encouraged to donate unused or unopened packages of diapers, which will be distributed to people in need.
