Preparing for Parenthood

In recognition of World Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 1-7), the Rockland County Department of Health is encouraging expectant parents to learn about the benefits of breastfeeding. During the week, shoppers at the following local farmers’ markets can get information about breastfeeding and get their questions answered by lactation experts: 

• Aug. 1, 10am-2pm: Spring Valley Farmers’ Market, Community Parking Lot on North Church Street and Route 45 (Main Street)

• Aug. 2, 10am-1pm: Nyack Farmers’ Market, Municipal Parking Lot on Main Street

• Aug. 4, 8:30am-1pm: Suffern Farmers’ Market, corner of Lafayette and Orange avenues

• Aug. 5, 10am-1pm: at the Haverstraw Farmers’ Market, in front of the Haverstraw Village Hall on Maple Avenue

Good Shabbes and Stuff

Toddlers can welcome Shabbat summer camp-style when Ramah Day Camp in Nyack and PJ Library of Rockland County co-host Bim Bam Shabbat on two Fridays this month. Tots and their parents or grandparents can participate in Shabbat-related songs, stories, and Jewish activities. Each session ends with lighting Shabbat candles, drinking grape juice, and eating challah. FREE!

 

Pow Wow at Bear MountainAug. 4-5

Sight and Sound Sensation

The music and dancing are truly captivating when the Redhawk Native American Arts Council hosts a weekend-long Pow Wow at Bear Mountain State Park. Kids can try their hand at Native American musical instruments and even check out a real tee-pee. This annual event features Native American food, music, dance, crafts, art, storytelling, and more.

Living History



Follow in the footsteps of the attacking American forces as the sounds of musket and cannon fire from the British camp boom around you during a Battlefield Lantern Walking Tour at Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site. For families with children ages 8 and older.

Rendezvous in Space

Kids and their parents can rendezvous with a comet when the Lower Hudson Valley Challenger Center in Airmont hosts its monthly Public Mission. Participants can perform activities similar to those done by real astronauts. “Crewmembers” attend a briefing session then select tasks to perform, such as navigation, medical, communication, and life support. Tasks are detailed enough to feel real yet simple enough for kids to do.

Animal Superheroes

Kids can learn about superheroes in the animal world and meet some really cool creatures when Bergen County’s Tenafly Nature Center hosts Animal Super Powers. Children will also create their own animal superhero cape to take home.

A 160-Year Tradition

The massive Dutchess County Fair in nearby Rhinebeck could easily become an annual family addiction with its fun-filled lineup of crafts, foods, entertainment, animals, and amusements.

 

Renaissance Fair NYAug. 4 – Sept. 23

For Little Lords and Ladies

Love it or not, it’s worth taking the kids to at least once: This year’s New York Renaissance Faire, held in Tuxedo’s Sterling Forest State Park, opens Aug. 4 and runs weekends (plus Labor Day) through Sept. 23.
