Top Things to Do with Kids in Rockland County NY - September 2011


We've selected the best things to do with kids from our September calendar. Find fun family events happening this month, including several street fairs and festivals throughout the county, a storytime event in West Nyack that celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, an Autumn Family Campfire at Tenafly Nature Center in nearby NJ, a Rosh Hashanah celebration at the JCC, an exciting new exhibit at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, and more!

Summer's over, but it doesn't quite feel like fall yet: perfect weather to peruse one of Rockland County's several street fairs and festivals!

On September 4, the New City Chamber of Commerce hosts an event on South Main Street by the courthouse; 845-638-1395; www.newcitychamber.com.

Suffern hosts its street fair on September 18 along Lafayette Street; 845-357-2600; www.suffernvillage.com.

Finally, Nyack presents its famous fair, with performances by the Amazing Grace Circus, on September 25; 631-234-4183. All events are 10am-5pm, rain or shine.

 

 

open micA Funny Fundraiser

Child Care Resources of Rockland (CCRR) will host its third annual LOL! Laugh Out Loud Comedy Night, featuring the comedic talents of Rich Ramirez and friends. Proceeds from the event will benefit CCRR, which helps families locate appropriate early childhood education and school-age care services, provides technical assistance to improve the quality of care in local programs, and advocates for increased investment in quality child care and education in Rockland County. The show will be held September 9 at the Comfort Inn & Suites of Nanuet, 425 East Route 59, Nanuet. $50; $90 per couple. Show starts at 8pm; doors open at 7pm for open mic and happy hour. 9/11 MemorialRemembering 9/11

On the tenth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the National 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan will open for the victim's families with a commemoration ceremony hosted by the City of New York. Members of the public may begin planning their visits on September 12 via the online reservation system. After entering the 9/11 Memorial Welcome Site at 1 Albany Street, visitors can expect to see the largest man-made waterfalls in North America flowing into the reflecting pools in the two towers' footprints. The space will also include a Memorial Grove for special ceremonies and events. Families who wish to visit the memorial must reserve a specific date and time on Monday-Friday from 10am-8pm and on weekends and holidays from 9am-8pm until January 8. From January 9-March 10, the memorial will be open from 10am-6pm Monday-Sunday. The last entries are ushered in an hour before closing. For more information, visit www.911memorial.org.



 

 

pinatasCelebrate Hispanic Heritage

Barnes & Noble observes National Hispanic Heritage Month with stories from Spanish-speaking places around the globe, such as Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Children ages 2-10 are invited to celebrate the history and rich culture of these areas and learn some Spanish words, too. All storyimes include an artistic activity. Gather around the campfire to learn about seasonal changes, listen to stories, and roast marshmallows for s'mores at an Autumn Family Campfire at the Tenafly Nature Center. In the event of inclement weather, the campfire will be moved to an indoor fireplace. For families with children 5 years and older. September 24, 6:30pm. $10. Tenafly Nature Center, 313 Hudson Avenue, Tenafly, NJ.

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum unveils its newest exhibit, The World of Bees, an interactive display featuring a live colony of honeybees in a thriving observation hive plus hands-on activities. Opening weekend activities include games, crafts, and refreshments. September 24-25, 12-4pm. All ages. $3; free children ages 2 and under. Rosh HashanahCelebrate Rosh Hashanah

The JCC Rockland continues its Jewish Holiday Series with Celebrate Rosh Hashanah on September 26 (3:30-4:30pm). Toddlers and their parents or grandparents can create holiday cards, sing songs, hear a story, and make New Year treats for Jewish war veterans. FREE. Music Classes 4 KidsMake Music Together

This month, new parents and those with older kids returning to school but a younger one still at home can check out a free trial class at Music Classes 4 Kids. Each 45-minutes class includes songs, chants, movement, dance, instrument play, games, and craft activities. There are options in Suffern, Pearl River, New City, and more; see this month's calendar for dates and locations.
